Amsterdam Original Pancakes
Victoria Street, Kamloops, BC
This is one of my favourite breakfast places in town. The wooden tables look like they have a few stories to tell. Besides who can resist those beautiful high ceilings and red brick walls? I like to sit as close to the front window as possible so I can see the going ons of Saturday morning on Victoria Street. Today I had the soup and sandwich. The grilled ham and cheese sandwich is pretty standard. But oh that lovely melted cheese...The onion soup is very good as well. This lunch comes with a salad topped with a honey-mustard dressing - all for $7.99. When I am up for a true heart attack breakfast, I order the bacon and cheese pancake and slather it in syrup. The combination of the salty and the sweet is my idea of heaven. This heart stopping/heart throbbing breakfast goes for $8.69. Generally, the food is out with ten minutes of ordering. However, in the past, I've found the service to be hot and cold. As of late, it has been very good. My husband likes to engage the waitresses in chit chat and jokes. With that kind of encouragement, our waitress today became over the top friendly. There certainly is a fine line. I certainly like to have my water and coffee cup always full, but when the service comes to the point of interrupting conversation....Generally this is a great Saturday morning brunch place. Since it has become generally less busy on Saturday mornings, I find the service is much more consistent. My advice to the waitresses is that if you keep the coffee cups full without bordering on gushy, you will still get a generous tip.

,Dorian Greek House Tavern
Victoria St. Kamloops, BC
Will this restaurant last longer than other places that have been in this location? I'm sure the owners hope so considering that they've renovated and moved the kitchen to the back and created a new seating area. Actually, the layout of this restaurant is quite nice. Enjoy your meal looking out at Victoria Street or down on other diners and the kitchen workers. The service was fast and efficient. The server's friendliness actually bordered on overly sappy sweet making the baklava seem like it needed even more honey. Worse yet, both servers we talked to complained about another Greek restaurant in town - very unprofessional. We decided to share a chicken/calamari meal for $15.95. This came with all of the usual accoutrements - rice, potato, pita bread, tzatziki and Greek salad. The chicken was quite tender and succulent. The potatos were too lemony. The calamari tasted like it had been taken out of the freezer and microwaved. Without the crunchiness or the flavour, the calamari certainly didn't taste like it was freshly fried. Given that the prices in this restaurant are fairly typical of prices in other Greek restaurants, I'll have to give this restaurant a pass the next time I'm in the mood for Greek. Sorry girls, but I may have to try the place that you were so quick to condemn.

Milestones
I have reviewed this restaurant before...Today I had the roast corn and potato chowder soup with a cornbread muffin...It was very good. Unfortunately, the hostess was not in the least bit friendly. Worse yet, the dishes weren't clean at all. I had to send back my spoon for a new one. The other dishes looked like they were permanently stained or had questionable substances on them. These two things alone really soured my experience. Poor effort for a business that really has a lot of competition in our restaurant happy city.
